Biodiversity research directly impacts the public. It is necessary (and fun!) to illustrate how such research supports healthy, resilient land, and by extension, a healthier and happier society. One of my goals is to communicate the importance of maintaining plant biodiversity and explain how research at Denver Botanic Gardens contributes to biodiversity science. I do this in many ways, including leading bioblitzes and field trips, working with private landowners and partnership organizations on local projects, giving scientific talks, providing advice about STEM careers to students, and teaching people about the importance of natural history collections.
I also engage in various professional service roles including as an associate editor for the journal Biological Invasions, as a past member of the Board of Directors of the Colorado Native Plant Society, and as a member of the Colorado Department of Agriculture's Noxious Weed Advisory Committee.
